THE JOFFREY BALLET OF CHICAGO

The London Symphony Orchestra
Conducted by Arnold Roth

Four Winds is proud to present music from two of the most popular ballets performed by the internationally acclaimed Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, "Kettentanz" and "Birthday Variations." Founded in 1956 by Robert Joffrey, the company is recognized as one of the major international forces in dance, known for its virtuosity and exciting original repertoire - an American Classic.

"Kettentanz" is artistic director Gerald Arpino's salute to the Old Vienna of court balls and weingartens. The ballet is filled with Viennese style dances performed to the galops, waltzes, and polkas of Johann Strauss.

" ....it has invention and a blithe use of music that extends and illuminates its dancers, and shows an imaginative sense of form.” – Clive Barnes, The New York Times

"Birthday Variations" is Arpino's neo-romantic ballet that was commissioned to celebrate the 30th birthday of The Joffrey Ballet. The London Symphony Orchestra gives a stirring performance of Verdi’s opera music from "I Lombardi" and "I Vespri Siciliani."

"Birthday Variations, set to some of Verdi’s infectious opera-ballet music, is a sparkling showpiece of classical dancing... It is a delight..." - Anna Kisselgoff, The New York Times

GREAT MOZART PIANO WORKS

Performed by John Novacek

Four Winds is proud to present the dynamic young pianist John Novacek, performing some of the most popular and demanding piano works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Novacek regularly tours North and Central America, Europe, Japan, Korea, and China as both recitalist and concert soloist.

In the latter capacity, he has presented over twenty different concerti with dozens of orchestras. Venues include the Kennedy center, Avery Fisher Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Hollywood Bowl, Suntory Hall (Tokyo), and Theatre des Champs-Elysees (Paris) to name a few. John took top prizes at the Leschetizky, Etude Music Club, Carmel Music Society, Mannes Concerto, and Joanna Hodges International Piano Competitions. He has played on radio broadcasts world-wide, often heard on syndicated programs such as NPR's "Performance Today," "the Record Shelf," "First Hearing," and "St. Paul Sunday," and he's been a feature performer on many television shows including the "Tonight Show" and "Entertainment Tonight."

"Novacek is a commanding presence at the keyboard, not just because of a sterling technique, but also his virile, integrated playing. Throughout the high-velocity runs, to which he brought a diamond-hard brilliance, there was always more substance than showiness. And in the lyric sections he revealed uncommon poetic depths." - Los Angeles Times

FRENCH ROMANCE

Performed by Anthony & Joseph Paratore

On one piano or two, Anthony and Joseph Paratore are considered one of today's foremost keyboard duo. Let them transport you with the romance of an all French repertoire on this inspired CD.

The music written for two pianos and one piano/four hands by French composers is vast, rich, and simply wonderful. From early on with our work as duo-pianists, this repertoire spoke to us. We realized that it appealed to our sense of color and nuance as well as deeply inspiring our creativity in the world of sound and atmosphere. Indeed the realm of Duo-pianism produces the orchestral possibilities with two keyboards and four hands. It is also interesting to note that the school of French composers not only were aware of this, but nearly all the important French composers contributed to the four hand literature. Moreover they also obviously had an affinity for children's music as evidenced by such titles as "Mother Goose Suite," "Dolly Suite," and "Children's Games" among others. As duo-pianists we revel in the challenge of transporting our listening audience into this unique and wonderful world of imagery, impressionism, and colors in music. Hence our presentation of "French Romance"; our romance with French composers.

Sure to be a favorite is a very special new Christmas song "Take Me To Christmas Past," written by Marvin Hamlisch and sung by the talented young mezzo-soprano Tami Fire. Led by Grammy Award winner George Vosburgh and produced by the renowned Arnie Roth, Pittsburgh Symphony Brass performs on "The Spirit of Christmas" with the bold, virtuoso flair for which they have become so popular.

BENJAMIN BRITTEN: SAINT NICOLAS
Op. 42 A Cantata, Words by Eric Crozier

The Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Indianapolis
Frederick Burgomaster, Conductor

I. Introduction
II. The Birth of Nicolas
III. Nicolas devotes himself to God
IV. He journeys to Palestine
V. He comes to Myra and is chosen Bishop
VI. Nicolas from Prison
VII. Nicolas and the Pickled Boys
VIII. His Piety and Marvelous Works
IX. The Death of Nicolas

Formed in 1883, the choir under the direction of Frederick Burgomaster has achieved an international reputation for excellence in choral music, and has sung to audiences in many of the great cathedrals of the world, including St.. PaulÕs and Westminster Abby (London), St. MarkÕs (Venice), and St. PeterÕs Basilica (Rome).

The cantata Saint Nicolas, composed by Benjamin Britten in 1948 and based on the poetry of Eric Crozier, tell the story of Nicolas from his birth, through becoming Bishop of Myra, and serving that diocese faithfully until his death. He is the patron saint of Russia and Greece, and is universally known to children as "Santa Claus." Many legends have sprung up concerning the life of St. Nicolas, most of them relating to the care of the poor and oppressed, and with his power of appearing from great distances to rescue those who called on him.

Britten's music is highly pictorial, describing the events of St. Nicolas' life as if they had been recorded in vivid paintings and sketches. Each movement is based on a particular experience or event in the life of Nicolas. Britten has also included two hymns, to be sung by choir and congregation, and accompanied by orchestra and organ.

George Frideric Handel: Messiah
In August 22, 1741, at a low point in his life and career, and suffering from partial paralysis due to a stroke, George Frideric Handel began work on Messiah. In an incredible 24 days, the great dramatic composer completed perhaps the most powerful, spiritually moving, and popular oratorio of all time. In the face of adversity, Handel rose to an unparalleled level of inspired achievement, saying upon the completion of the Hallelujah Chorus, “I did think I saw all Heaven before me, and the great God himself.”

Scott Wesley
Open Eyes

Produced by: Joe Dilillo, Lee Smith, and Scott Wesley
Executive Producer: Lee Smith
Recording Engineer: Joe Dilillo

Hi everyone, my name is Scott Wesley. I am from the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, and have been playing guitar and writing music for just around 5 years. Music and singing have been my passion ever since I can remember. I started out on piano at the age of five, and from then on I’ve gone through various instruments including drums, bass, and keyboard.

Growing up, I was surrounded by the Beatles day and night, thanks to my Dad. I would have to say that they are my biggest influence, and that’s probably where I get my “pop” sound from. Other than that, artists that influence me today would be Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Jason Mraz, and Keller Williams, all solo artists as you can tell. This unique blend of musical influences helped form my own sound that I bring to your ears.

Scott Wesley
Everything

Produced by: Joe Dilillo, Lee Smith, and Scott Wesley
Executive Producer: Lee Smith
Recording Engineer: Joe Dilillo

Four Winds is proud to present a new single "Everything" by young Chicago rock artist Scott Wesley, along with a second new track called "Permanent."

Says Scott, "I wrote "Everything" a couple years back, shortly after the release of my first album. It was one of those songs that I kept putting on the back burner because I was never really satisfied with it. One day I told myself to just get it over with and finish the song. After working on the structure and the production in the studio, it actually turned out to be, in my opinion, one of my better songs. Hope you enjoy!

"Permanent" is basically about how we shouldn't take the things and people we have in life for granted because one day they may not be there for you. It's kind of a tribute to all my friends and family to let them know that I appreciate them. I think it's a very peppy, feel good song that hopefully will inspire others to look at their lives a little differently." —Scott Wesley

Our favorite quote: “I’m going to say something to you that may frighten you. Ready? Classical music. OK. Wait a minute. Before you recoil like I just stuffed you mouth full of brussels sprouts, let me turn you on to something a little different. Danney Alkana has blended virtuoso rock guitar with the time-tested melodies and intricate orchestration of the masters to create his latest album, “Rock The Bach”. I will admit that when I first received my copy of Alkana's project, I was skeptical. After popping it into my player and listening for awhile though, you could not wipe the smile off my face.” —Steve Robles, The San Bernardino County Sun
